Freedomia — January in builder mode 🧡

January was a month of lots of product, lots of “under the hood” development and a huge community leap 🧡

And just like I did in October, November and December, here’s Freedomia’s transparency report for January.

Freedomia is a small project: no budget, no funding rounds, no “token” to fund vapour.

We believe in bootstrapping: if the service adds value, the user base grows, and Freedomia grows with it. No shortcuts.

And the best part of January isn’t just the code: it’s the community.

On 24 October (three weeks after opening the Telegram group) we passed 100 members. In January — barely three months later — we’ve passed 1,000 and we’re now over 1,100 Freedomitas.

January was a month of many new features… and a lot of groundwork so what’s next is more solid, more private and more scalable.

• Security: card data is now protected by 2FA.
• Top up with Monero (XMR) is now available.
• Local currency: approximate balance in your currency + formats (and balance in sats 🟠).
• GrapheneOS + Samsung Watch: verified method to add the card to the watch.
• Smarter SMS system + privacy improvements and in-panel explanation.

💱 New data: preferred currency

This month we added the option to show balance in a preferred currency (not just USD). From now on, each monthly report will include this distribution.

1️⃣ Security: card data protected by 2FA

Accessing full number, CVV and expiry date is sensitive. As of January, every access to full card data requires 2FA (email OTP or authenticator app).

• Auto-hide after 60 seconds with visible countdown
• Email alert each time data is accessed
• Rate limit: max 3 views per hour

2️⃣ Top up with Monero (XMR)

This was one of the most requested features… and it’s here: deposits with Monero (XMR) on Freedomia.

On a project where privacy matters, integrating Monero was almost inevitable. We did it prioritising reliability (privacy without reliability is pointless).

3️⃣ Local currency, number format… and balance in sats 🟠

Not everyone thinks in USD. You can now set your local currency (160+ currencies) and see an approximate balance below USD.

You can also choose number format (US / EU / Swiss). And for bitcoiners… tap the balance to toggle:

4️⃣ GrapheneOS + Samsung Watch (confirmed)

For Freedomitas who are serious about privacy: we’ve verified a method that works to add the card to a Samsung Watch even when using GrapheneOS on the phone.

5️⃣ Smarter SMS system + improved privacy

We’ve completely redesigned how verification SMS (OTPs) are handled. Goal: zero collisions, more scalability and more privacy.

• Smart distribution across multiple shared numbers
• Prevents two cards with the same last 4 digits from sharing a number
• Privacy improvements in the SMS dashboard
• “Why am I seeing this?” help panel inside /sms-otp

⚠️ January incidents and bugs (no sugar-coating)

January had its share of reality too:

• ATM withdrawals were temporarily paused. We communicated immediately and reactivated quickly.
• After enabling session logout, some TOTP users got stuck using backup codes.
• If you lost access to your TOTP app, you couldn’t disable it/switch to email. Fixed.

🛠️ What’s next

January had a lot of visible delivery, but also a lot of groundwork for what’s coming. The main lines right now:

• Multi-card system: manage multiple cards from one account (couple, family, etc.) without creating multiple emails.
• New plans: more subscription options with different limits, fees and prices (occasional vs heavy users).
• And more: we’re still putting in hours on technical improvements, privacy and scalability.

If the service adds value, the user base grows, and Freedomia grows with it. Real bootstrapping.

2026 will bring good things: more privacy, more control, more resilience and more tools to live without asking permission. We’re still in builder mode. 🚀
